The five inductees for the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2024 have been revealed, and it's pretty hard to argue that they're all incredibly influential classics.
Back in March, the Strong National Museum of Play announced the twelve finalists that made up the shortlist for the inductees, but only five could ever make the cut, and now, those five have been decided.
Metroid has missed the list again, which makes twice, but Myst will be pleased to finally be included in the Hall of Fame on its third nomination, while arcade classic Asteroids has made the cut after just one previous nomination.
Here are the five inductees into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2024.
- Asteroids (originally released in 1979)
- Myst (originally released in 1993)
- Resident Evil (originally released in 1996)
- SimCity (originally released in 1989)
- Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness (originally released as simply Ultima in 1981)
Sadly, that means Elite, Guitar Hero, Tokimeki Memorial (a Japanese-only dating sim series), Metroid, You Don't Know Jack, Neopets, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater all failed to make the cut.
Still, thanks to the way the World Video Game Hall of Fame works, all of these games and franchises are eligible to become shortlisted for the next round of inductions next year. Let's hope they make it.
The Strong National Museum of Play describes these inductees as games that have "significantly influenced popular culture and the video game industry".
The inductees will be "enshrined in the museum's World Video Game Hall of Fame rotunda", allowing visitors to the museum to see them and absorb their cultural weight in person.
